Step 3: Keep Communication Open — No Matter What
This is the most important step. Make absolutely clear that:
- Honesty is never punished, even if they made a mistake online
- You’re on their side — you’ll problem-solve together, not blame them
- Uncomfortable feelings or experiences should be shared immediately
- Questions about anything online are welcome
Step 4: Update Privacy Settings Regularly (Quarterly)
Apps change their defaults frequently (usually making them less private to serve ads better).
Every 3 months, spend 30 minutes together reviewing and updating:
- Who can message or friend request them
- Who can see posts, stories, and location data
- What notifications and alerts they receive
- Spending controls on in-app purchases
- Data permissions (camera, microphone, location, contacts)
Step 5: Model Healthy Digital Habits (The Most Important)
Children copy what they see more than what they hear.
If you want them to use screens intentionally, avoid constant scrolling yourself.
If you want them to sleep well, put your own phone away before bed.
If you want them to come to you with concerns, listen calmly when they do.
Step 6: Teach Them About Manipulation and Algorithms
Understanding how they’re being manipulated is protective.
Explain:
- How apps use psychology to keep them engaged (infinite scroll, notifications, streaks, rewards)
- How algorithms work (what they watch influences what’s recommended)
- How companies make money from their data and attention
- Why FOMO is manufactured and not real
Step 7: Build Their Judgment and Resilience
Teaching judgment is more protective than bans.
Have regular conversations about:
- What feels right and what feels wrong online
- Red flags in conversations (requests for secrecy, rapid escalation of intimacy)
- What to do if something makes them uncomfortable
- How to handle peer pressure
- Why they might feel anxious after social media use
Red Flags: When to Step In Immediately
Most online activity is safe and normal. However, act early if you notice any of these warning signs:

Sudden secrecy:
Your child closes tabs or apps when you walk by, hides their device, becomes defensive about what they’re doing online, or uses multiple devices you don’t know about. -
Significant mood changes:
Increased anxiety, depression, anger, or withdrawal from family and friends (could indicate cyberbullying, grooming, exposure to harmful content, or social comparison anxiety). -
Messages from unknown or suspicious people:
Especially adults or people claiming to be peers your child has never met offline. -
Requests for personal information:
Someone online asking for their address, school, location, details about when they’re home alone, or information about their family’s schedule or finances. -
Requests for photos:
Especially of their face, body, or anything private. This is a major red flag. -
Inappropriate or disturbing content on their device:
Sexual content, extreme violence, hateful material, or anything disturbing. -
Unexpected charges on bills:
In-app purchases, gift cards, or other spending they didn’t tell you about. -
Changed sleep patterns:
They’re up late on devices, constantly checking notifications, or seem exhausted.
What to Do If You Notice Red Flags

Stay calm.
Panic will shut down communication and make your child less likely to talk to you in future. -
Ask questions:
“I noticed [X]. Can you help me understand what’s happening?”
Curiosity, not accusation. -
Listen without immediately punishing.
You want them to keep talking to you. If you punish honesty, they’ll hide things next time. -
Keep evidence.
Screenshots of inappropriate messages or contact — don’t delete. You may need them for authorities. -

— Report suspected child exploitation globally. Coordinates with law enforcement internationally. If abuse involves cross-border elements, this service handles it. -
NSPCC Online Safety (UK)
— Free advice, resources, guides for specific platforms, and a parent helpline (0808 800 5000) if you need to talk through concerns. Excellent resource. -
Childline (UK)
— For children and young people themselves. Free, confidential, available 24/7. If your child feels more comfortable talking to someone neutral first. -
Internet Matters (UK)
— Practical guides, expert advice, and resources for parents. Excellent for specific platform guidance. -
UK Safer Internet Centre
— Resources, reporting tools, and guides tailored to UK families. Annual Safer Internet Day initiatives. -
Childnet International
— Resources for parents, young people, and educators about online safety.
When to use each service:
- Use CEOP or Internet Watch Foundation if illegal content or active exploitation is involved.
- Use NSPCC or Childline if you need advice or your child needs to talk to someone neutral.
- Use CyberTipline for international abuse or content that crosses borders.
- Use Internet Matters or Childnet for general guidance and support.
The Bottom Line: Knowledge + Transparency + Conversation = Safety
Online dangers are real, but they’re not random or completely unmanageable.
Most risks follow predictable patterns and can be significantly reduced through:
- Knowledge: Understanding what risks exist and how they typically unfold
- Transparent boundaries: Clear, consistent rules that apply to the whole family
- Open communication: Creating an environment where your child knows they can come to you without fear
- Smart settings: Using parental controls, privacy settings, and app approval wisely
- Teaching judgment: Rather than imposing rules, helping them develop critical thinking about online interactions
- Modelling healthy habits: Using screens intentionally yourself
Your ultimate goal isn’t to protect them from the internet forever — it’s to teach them to navigate it safely so that when they’re adults, they make smart choices independently.
